Button jewelry

I finished the button jewelry for my boss' wife, using buttons she found from her grandmother and great-grandmother.  I love the way these turned out.

I realize the leaves on the earrings are pointing two different directions.  I actually fixed this, but didn't take another picture.

I have an old sewing box that belonged to my maternal grandmother and I looked through it a little yesterday to see if there were any buttons.  It was a long shot, because my granny did not sew, but I found a few pretty ones.  I'm not sure how old they are, but they're pretty.

On another note, I'm getting together with a few of my friends soon for our annual Christmas lunch.  This year, we've decided to bring an ornament to swap, rather than buying gifts for everyone.  I'm now on the hunt for a beaded Christmas ornament pattern.  Something handmade is always more special than something bought, right?

  1. How do you make the attachments for the buttons? Do you remove the existing back piece (don't know what it's called) on domed buttons or do you insert a pin through it to create the loop at the top?

    1. I left the shank (back piece) on, and inserted an eye pin. That was too loose, though, and the button kept spinning around, so I wrapped some 26 gauge wire around the shank to take up the empty space, and wraped the same wire around the eye pin above and below the shank to secure it to the pin. Hope that helps!
